Hungary has enacted stringent new regulations targeting unauthorized cryptocurrency trading, with violations carrying a two-year prison sentence. The law, effective July 1, 2025, criminalizes the use of unlicensed platforms for crypto transactions, impacting an estimated 500,000 citizens engaged in digital asset activities.

Revolut has suspended operations in Hungary indefinitely in response to the legislation. Penalties escalate for larger transactions, with offenders facing up to three years imprisonment. The government's crackdown reflects growing global tensions between regulatory oversight and crypto's decentralized ethos.
